France thanks PH for ‘heartfelt messages’ on Notre Dame fire

MANILA, Philippines — The Embassy of France in Manila expressed gratitude over the Philippines’ “heartfelt messages” following the fire that razed parts of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account on Tuesday, the embassy thanked its “friends in the Philippines for their heartfelt messages following the massive fire that engulfed parts of the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris” Monday night. “Merci beaucoup.”

Malacañang earlier expressed its solidarity with France as it lamented the massive blaze that engulfed the roof of the historic cathedral.

“Thousands of various races have at one time or another stood either by themselves or with their families or friends in front of this historic cathedral and marvel at its architectural grandeur,” presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

“Their sojourn there left beautiful memories engraved in their hearts and recorded in photographs. Pain and sorrow were felt by the millions upon hearing the catastrophic fire of the Notre Dame place of worship,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Embassy of France in Manila noted that French President Emmanuel Macron “vowed to rebuild this iconic 850-year-old UNESCO [United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization] world heritage landmark.”

“We will rebuild Notre Dame because this is what the French expect, because this is what our history deserves, because it’s our destiny,” Macron was quoted as saying.
