NBI starts probe into plot to assassinate Evasco
MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has started its probe on the reported assassination plot against former Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco Jr. who is running in the gubernatorial race in Bohol.
NBI Deputy Director Vicente De Guzman III said they have already received the family’s request for an investigation.
“I appointed Tovera to conduct the probe,” De Guzman told reporters. He is referring to NBI’s Anti-Organized and Transnational Crimes Division (NBI-AOTCD) Chief Joel Tovera.
Evasco’s family sought the NBI’s help after learning of a plot to assassinate their patriarch. Evasco is running for Bohol governor under the National People’s Coalition-Hugpong ng Pagbabago.
In a letter addressed to NBI Director Dante Gierran, the Evasco family said that despite the presence of security escorts provided by law-enforcement agencies, they were “jolted by observations given by visiting friends and supporters from Davao City who noticed unmarked motorcycles occasionally running alongside the service vehicle of the gubernatorial candidate.” /ee
