CEBU CITY – Cebuanos on Wednesday commemorated the 1898 uprising waged by Katipuneros against the Spanish colonizers.

The battle between Cebuano Katipuneros and the Spaniards took place in the area where Tres de Abril Street is now located.

Members of the Cebu City government laid flowers at the historical marker on Tres De Abril.

The ceremony was led by Margarita “Margie” Matheu, commissioner of Cebu City’s Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission, along with personnel of Barangay San Nicolas led by Barangay Captain Clifford Jude Niñal.

Members of the Philippine Coast Guard and the Veterans Federation of the Philippines were also present during the event.

Visayan hero Leon Kilat, with 179 Sanicolasnons or residents of San Nicolas, launched the uprising in Cebu on April 3, 1898, a Palm Sunday.
