MANILA, Philippines — The  Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is calling on the public to practice waste segregation as it is poised to start with its rehabilitation of the polluted Manila Bay.

MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim made the call on Saturday as he stressed the important role waste segregation plays in the overall Manila Bay cleanup strategy.

“Simple segregation of garbage, when done habitually, can help rid of solid waste that goes to the estero and drainage system,” Lim said.

Lim said participants in the clean-up will assemble at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park as early as 6 a.m. for a solidarity walk towards the Baywalk seaside promenade along Roxas Boulevard.

According to Lim, the MMDA-led clean-up will not only clear Manila Bay of trash, but it will also help educate the public on the importance of proper garbage management and disposal.

At least 1,000 MMDA employees will be joining the coastal cleanup that will start at the Manila Yacht Club area and ends at the U.S. Embassy.  /muf
