MANILA, Philippines — A rape suspect detained at the Malate Police Station was killed on Thursday night after reportedly grabbing the firearm of a policeman in his attempt to escape.

According to a report by the Manila Police District (MPD), suspect Benedicto Dizon allegedly grabbed the service firearm of PO1 Dennis Javier at 9:20 p.m. while at the Office of the Station Commander and fired at him, but missed.

This prompted Police Superintendent Bobby Ganipac to retaliate and shoot Dizon, who sustained two gunshot wounds on the chest.

Police said Dizon, 22, was rushed to the Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center in Malate but was declared dead on arrival at 10:15 p.m.

Dizon was arrested in Malate, Manila on Monday, Jan. 21, after allegedly molesting an eight-month-old baby. The child’s mother sought the assistance of the police after she discovered that the baby had been sexually molested. /jpv
