Heavy rains leave 14 villages near Buhi Lake flooded, residents evacuated
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines —At least one person has been reported dead as rescuers in Buhi town, Camarines Sur rush to save families who were left stranded in 14 villages near Buhi Lake continuous heavy rain caused the lake and the Rinaga River to overflow.
Buhi police spokesperson Police Officer 1 Jonah Quien said that they are still verifying the identity of the reported fatality in Sta. Cruz village.
There is no official number of rescued families yet, but the Buhi police said at least 50 families have already been brought to higher grounds, while not less than 50 more families are still waiting to be rescued. Police said six were reported missing while four of the rescued residents have been injured.
As rescuers only have one rubber boat to use and some roads were rendered impassable, rescuers are prioritizing families in areas near the safe zones, Quien said in a phone interview.
In some villages, floodwater have reached at least three feet deep, while in the villages of San Buena, San Pedro, and San Pascual, floodwater have already reached the roofs of some houses, Quien added.
She also said one telecommunication line went down, disrupting communication between the rescuers and the affected town residents.
