‘Habagat’ season ends; transition to ‘amihan’ underway — Pagasa

Cool weather associated to the holiday season is expected in the coming days, after the state weather bureau announced the end of the “habagat” season or southwest monsoon. 

“Recent analyses showed a significant weakening of the southwest monsoon winds over the last few days,” Vicente Malano of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in a statement on Thursday.

“With this development, the southwest monsoon season or known locally as ‘habagat’ has ended,” he also said.

With the termination of habagat, Malano said the country is now in transition to “amihan” or northeast monsoon. 

This weather system is usually associated with cooler winds during the holiday season.

Storms are also usually stronger and have higher chances of landfall during this season. /kga
