Mom: Help my daughter, please

Fevie Dejino was only 3 years old when she was diagnosed with beta thalassemia, a blood disorder, in 2000.

“We were worried so we had her checked by doctors at a hospital in Manila,” said Fe, Dejino’s 60-year-old mother. The Dejino family lives in Balanga City, Bataan province.

Beta thalassemia reduces the production of hemoglobin, the iron-containing protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to cells throughout the body. Low levels of hemoglobin lead to a lack of oxygen in many parts of the body, leaving the patient pale.

Although Dejino is now 21 years old, she has yet to complete high school because of her condition.

An outpatient at Philippine Children’s Medical Center in Quezon City, she needs to undergo three blood transfusions every two weeks. The transfusions cost P8,400.

On top of this, Dejino needs to take Exjade twice a day with each tablet priced at P900 and 15 vials of Disperal at P448 per vial for five days. The medicines help reduce the excessive production of iron in her body.
