2 pocket miners die in Benguet tunnel

LA TRINIDAD, BENGUET – Two miners died from gas poisoning at sitio (sub-village) Antamok, Ucab village in the Benguet mining town of Itogon on Tuesday (Aug. 14).

Jomar Lay-os and Astrid Guitelen, both 23 years old Antamok residents, entered a mine tunnel around 5 p.m. to fix their blower.

The miners failed to surface after four hours, prompting their fellow miners to follow them.

They were found unconscious but were declared dead on arrival at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center.

The Benguet government had earlier suspended all pocket mining activities due to strong rains. KARLSTON LAPNITEN
