Flood kills 15 people in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH — The flood in Cambodia, especially along the Mekong river has receded in the upstream, but remains threat for downstream, according to the Ministry of Water Resource and Meteorology.

Mekong flood in Stung Treng province is receding, while it remains a threat in Kratie and Kampong Cham provinces, it added.

The Mekong water level in Kratie and Kampong Cham is exceeding alarm level, and the rise also happened in Bassac River in Kandal province, it added.

The ministry also forecast that the increasing trend of water level in Mekong Krom (Lower Mekong), Bassac and Tonle Sap Lake can last until Aug. 14.

Since the start of August, Mekong floods have been affecting six provinces – Stung Treng, Kratie, Thbong Khmum, Kampong Cham, Kandal and Prey Veng.

Mr. Keo Vy, Spokesperson of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM) said the floods have so far affected more than 61,900 families, and killed 15 people, including 8 children.

There are total 6 more injured during the flood, he added.
