Water floods into residential areas in Yangon

YANGON — Water flooded into residential areas in many townships in Yangon due to heavy rain, high tide with exceptionally high spring in the last day of waning, said Director General Dr Kyaw Moe Oo from Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

Myanmar Port Authority (MPA) warned of exceptionally high rise in water may occur from August 10 to 16 in Yangon. The water covered areas in Thingangyun, Dawbon, Botahtaung, Lanmadaw, Dagon Seikkan, North Dagon, North Oakkalapa, Kyimyindine, Thaketa and South Oakkalapa Townships on August 12.

“We are not monitoring the exceptionally high spring but the MPA has issued a warning about it. More water entered into residential areas amidst heavy rain and the exceptionally high spring,” he said.

Some shops were closed and power was cut-off during the flood.

“The water reached my shop around 4 pm and I had to close my shop temporarily. The flood prevented people from going outside,” said a tea shop owner from Dawbon Township.

“I have been selling betel quid here for a long time. The flood always occurred here but it is the worst this time. We are moving our belongings as the tide will increase tomorrow,” said a man selling betel quid at Botahtaung Township.

The exceptionally high spring occurred in Hlaing and Yangon Rivers and Ngamoeyeik creek from 4 to 5:30 pm on August 12. The water receded slowly after.
