Gov’t decentralization doable under 1987 Charter—Lacson

If the objective of federalism advocates is “genuine decentralization and devolution,” then there just might be no need to revise the 1987 Constitution.

In a Twitter post on Friday, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said the faithful implementation of the Local Government Code could well achieve such goal.

President Duterte’s consultative committee recently approved a draft federal Constitution, which paves the way for a shift to a federal government.

Congress will still deliberate on the proposals. “If the objective is decentralization and devolution, why revise the Constitution and divide the nation?” Lacson wrote.
