/ 05:00 AM June 06, 2018

National No Smoking Month is observed every June by virtue of Proclamation No. 183 signed on May 30, 1993 by then President Fidel Ramos.

The proclamation highlights the need to focus national attention on the dangers of smoking as part of the awareness campaign on the ill effects of cigarettes.

According to the latest study of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology, 23.3 percent of the adult population in Metro Manila are smokers.

The three regions with the highest proportion of current adult smokers are Zamboanga Peninsula (31.3 percent), Central Luzon (31.1 percent) and Caraga (28.4 percent). —Marielle Medina
