Police officer nabbed for extorting from shippers in Basilan

Counter-intelligence operatives on Friday arrested a police officer extorting from shippers at a port in Basilan.

In an entrapment operation, members of the Counter-Intelligence Task Force (CITF) busted  Police Officer 3 Basir L. Alam of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Maritime Group 9.

Alam was caught in the act of extorting from an undercover agent posing as poseur shipper at around 3:15 p.m. at Port Area in Isabela City.

CITF chief Sr. Supt. Jose Chiquito Malayo said the entrapment operation stemmed from a tip alleging that some PNP personnel are extorting P500 to P1000 from shippers as travel clearance to allow them to board the ships to Zamboanga City.

Alam is now under the custody of CITF personnel and will be brought to Basilan Police Provincial Office.  /vvp
