DFA: No Filipinos hurt in ‘terror attack’ in Belgium

The Philippine Embassy in Brussels on Wednesday said no Filipinos were among the casualties in a possible terror attack in Belgium.

A man shot dead two police officers and one civilian in the Belgian city of Liège, about 100 kilometers south of the Belgium.

Belgian authorities said the incident is being treated as terrorism.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the embassy was closely monitoring the incident.

Ambassador Eduardo Jose de Vega said there are around 8,000 Filipinos in Belgium, including about 100 in Liege.

Reports said a man carrying a knife attacked two female police officers from behind, took their guns and fired at a young man in his car.

The suspect then took a woman hostage before he was shot and killed by responding police officers.

“We condole with the Government of Belgium and the Belgian people and stand in solidarity with them,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano said after receiving reports from the embassy. /vvp
