In light of Kiefer Ravena’s alleged use of banned substances, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered a review of energy drinks in Philippine markets.
In a statement on Tuesday, FDA director general Nela Charade Puno said that this was a “perfect opportunity” for the agency to reexamine the content and labeling of such products.
Ravena was suspended for 18 months by the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) after he tested positive for banned substances in the World Anti-Doping Agency list.

The 24-year old basketball player reportedly took a pre-workout supplement called “Dust Extreme.”
“I will immediately direct a thorough review of these products to protect the health- and fitness-conscious public,” Puno said.
“The FDA will appreciate the help and cooperation of Kiefer Ravena on this,” she added.
Puno said the FDA was mandated by Republic Act No. 9711 or the Food and Drug Administration Act of 2009 to ensure the “safety, efficacy, purity, and quality” of food products, medicines, cosmetics and medical devices. /je
