Senate sets plenary debate on plea to SC
Senators are set to discuss this week whether the Senate as a whole would make a formal appeal to the Supreme Court for a review of the decision to oust Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno through a quo warranto proceeding, which the decision’s critics said was unconstitutional.
Senate leaders agreed to table proposed Resolution No. 738 for plenary debates.
On Monday, Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri convened a meeting of the Senate rules committee to discuss when to calendar the measure.
At least 14 senators crossed party lines to sign the resolution.
“We agreed to calendar the resolution for plenary debates,” Zubiri said.
The senators who signed the proposed resolution were Senators Aquilino Pimentel III, Franklin Drilon, Francis Pangilinan, Antonio Trillanes IV, Leila de Lima, Bam Aquino, Ralph Recto, Francis Escudero, Risa Hontiveros, Sherwin Gatchalian, Joel Villanueva, Grace Poe, Sonny Angara and Loren Legarda.
