The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) conducted clearing operations in Tondo, Manila on Thursday.
MMDA and MTPB removed several obstructions such as assorted metals, tires, broken appliances and furniture, carts, bicycles, tables, and chairs.
Also included in the list of seized items was a makeshift swimming pool made of tarpaulin, which was supposed to be used for a birthday celebration.
“Setting up this pool is dangerous as children who will go on swimming might be hit by passing vehicles,” MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said in a statement.
“The problem on illegal parking and illegal vending has been existing for decades already, we lack discipline,” he said.
Garcia added that MMDA, which has gained notoriety for being anti-poor, is not against vendors and people trying to make a living. However, he also said that “things should be in order”.
“We continue doing our old ways, old habits and that is what we want to break,” Garcia said.
Meanwhile, MTPB Chief Dennis Alcoreza said the local agency cannot do clearing operations alone.
He said he was instructed by Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada to work hand-in-hand with MMDA.
“The City of Manila and MMDA cannot sustain the clearing operations alone, but combining our forces, we can make a difference,” Alcoreza said. /vvp
