DID YOU KNOW: 147th birth anniversary of pioneer educator Susana Revilla
Today, May 24, is the 147th birth anniversary of Susana Revilla, one of the pioneer educators in the country.
Born in 1871 in Santa Cruz, Manila, she was only 16 when she obtained authority to teach from the municipal school run by the Hermanas de Caridad.
Revilla then opened a primary school of her own on Bustos Street.
In 1896, she had to close the school following the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution.
It resumed operations in 1898 and ran up to 1900. Revilla then cofounded Instituto de Mujeres, a school for girls, with two other pioneer educators, Rosa Sevilla and Florentina Arellano.
In 1911, Revilla became the school’s directress, serving until her death on April 11, 1917. —Marielle Medina
