Today, May 22, is the 27th death anniversary of National Artist for Cinema Catalino “Lino” Ortiz Brocka.
Born on April 3, 1939, he took his social activism to the screen and left behind 66 films which breathed life and hope for the marginalized sectors of society.
Among these films were the notable “Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag” (1975), “Bona” (1980) and “Makiusap ka sa Diyos” (1991).
He also received awards and citations from the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards and Cannes Film Festival.
In 1997, he was posthumously named a National Artist. —Hezron Pios
