NAGA CITY—Vice President Leni Robredo on Monday called the demise of former Senator Edgardo “Edong” Angara a big loss for the country.
Speaking to the press at Tabuco Elementary School in this city minutes after she cast her vote for the barangay ang Sangguniang Kabataan elections, she extended her condolences to the family of the
Philippines’ special envoy to the European Union (EU).
Angara died due to a massive cardiac arrest in his home in Tagaytay City on Sunday. Angara was 83.
“Before he became a special envoy to the EU, he served as senator, as the [University of the Philippines] president, and secretary of agriculture. He held many positions, and throughout those, he truly served,” Robredo said.
Angara was the president of the University of the Philippines from 1981 to 1987, secretary of agriculture under former President Joseph Estrada, and senate president for two years from 1993. He also served as a senator from 1987 to 1998 and from 2001 to 2013. /je
