Mayor Erap: After elections, Manila to work on garbage problem

Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito “Erap” Estrada said the local government will work on solving the garbage problem in the city after Monday’s Synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections.

“We will concentrate on that after this election, kasi mayroon from other cities, I won’t mention it, hindi na tinatambak yung ibang basura nila. I have received reports on that,” Estrada said, adding that the lack of discipline of some Manila residents could be the reason for the mounds of garbage in certain parts of the city.

In July last year, Estrada received flak after a viral video surfaced showing  his staff dumping trash in Manila Bay as part of a publicity stunt for a cleanup drive led by the former president.

The staff member explained that the dumping of the garbage was for photo purposes only and that they would clean the trash afterwards.

The city’s street sweepers and garbage collectors deal with large volumes of garbage. During the popular Traslacion procession, a main feature of the celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Manila, the city government collected  12 truckloads or 69.43 tons of garbage. /vvp
