CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga — A Dumagat woman, who is running for kagawad (village councilor) in the hinterlands of Bulacan province, survived a gun attack on Sunday, the eve of the May 14 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.
Emilita de la Merced, 45, was in a stable condition as of 10 a.m. in a hospital in the City of Malolos, according to Chief Supt. Amador Corpus, Central Luzon police director.
The police held a briefing at the Regional Joint Security Coordinating Center here on Monday.
De la Merced is a candidate in Barangay Kabayunan, in Donya Remedios Trinidad town, which is listed as one of the police’s 223 election hotspots in Central Luzon.
She was on a truck with 20 other Dumagats at about 10 p.m. when two men on a motorcycle tailed the vehicle at Sitio Johnson, sped past it and fired at her.
De la Merced was hit in the left leg and right hand. /cbb
