HINUNANGAN,Southern Leyte – The controversial decision of the Supreme Court unseating Ma.Lourdes Sereno as Chief Justice should be respected since the High Court interprets the law of the land, according to Sen. Cynthia Villar.
Villar, who was guest speaker during the 50th anniversary of the Saints Peter and Paul Multi-Purpose Cooperative held at the town’s gymnasium, said that since Sereno had been ousted, the Senate would no longer have to hold the impeachment trial.
“Tayo, palagi susunod sa batas kasi kailangan. Wala naman tayong magagawa. Nagdecide na ang Supreme Court (We have to always follow the law since it is needed. There is nothing we can do. The Supreme Court has decided) so we have to follow what the Supreme Court decided,” Villar said on Saturday.
“The Supreme Court is the one which interprets the law, not us. If we have question on a law, we go to them (Supreme Court),” she added.
Villar said the Supreme Court has the authority to oust Sereno through the quo warranto petition filed by Solicitor General Jose Calida.
“The Supreme Court has decided already … na kaya nila magtanggal kasi sabi nila dahil from the very start may deperensiya yung pag-appoint sa kanya (The reason why she was removed is because the Supreme Court ruled that from the start, her appointment was already defective),” she said.
