Malacañang has congratulated Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, expressing optimism that his return to power will further strengthen the ties between the two countries.
The 92-year-old Mahathir is “an old friend of the Philippines,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said.
“His fresh mandate augurs well for the deep relations between the Philippines and Malaysia,” Roque said in a statement.
In a stunning political comeback, Mahathir was sworn into office as Malaysia’s new prime minister on Thursday, unseating Najib Razak who was implicated in a corruption scandal.
Mahathir, who ruled Malaysia from 1981 to 2003, is the world’s oldest elected leader.
Roque said the Philippines considered Malaysia a “brother nation and dependable partner” for its constructive role in the search for peace in Mindanao. —JULIE M. AURELIO
