Supporters of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno decried alleged efforts to adjust the law to allow her removal from office without the constitutionally-mandated impeachment process.

The Liberal Democrats for Justice insisted that the rule of law must prevail now that the Supreme Court (SC) is on the verge of deciding on the controversial quo warranto petition, which seeks to remove the country’s top magistrate from office.

“The rule of law, not of man, must prevail. Yielding to those in power, and not to the law, is not right,” the group said in a statement on Friday.

“Disregarding the law — whether in national issues such as the plot to kick out Chief Justice Sereno or in global issues such as the militarization in the West Philippine Sea — is not right,” it added.

The group said the law “must be predictable” and lamented the law’s alleged distortion to cater to “the whims of those in power.”

Among the signatories of the Liberal Democrats for Justice’s statement were Liberal Party officials and members – former President Benigno S. Aquino III, Senators Kiko Pangilinan, Franklin Drilon, Bam Aquino, and Leila de Lima.

The signatories vowed to continue to “fight for a Supreme Court that stands for a just rule of law.”
