The Department of Education (DepEd) has set aside about P10 million to subsidize a program to enhance the skills of teachers assigned to more than 100 special science elementary schools (SSES).

The funds will come from the P27 million that was released for 103 out of 200 SSES for “the enhancement of the capability of science teachers which is a critical input in producing high-caliber science students,” the DepEd said.

“It is important that we invest in the enrichment of our teachers’ mentoring skills, especially in the field of sciences because it will have a bearing on the kind of science-oriented graduates we produce,” said Education Secretary Armin Luistro  in a statement.

According to DepEd Memo No. 88, the amount, which is roughly 40 percent of the total SSES subsidy, is meant to be used for teacher conferences, training, seminars and immersion.

Some 25 percent, or P6.75 million, of the amount has been allocated for student activities, including leadership training, workshops, educational trips and investigative projects.
