Do not be silenced, CHR tells people
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Saturday called on the people to remain vigilant against threats to their basic human rights and not to keep quiet amid attacks on democracy.
But the people, according to CHR Chair Jose Luis Martin Gascon, should also examine whether current leaders respect their rights.
“We should also ask ourselves: Is this what we really want?” Gascon said in apparent reference to a Time Magazine article putting President Rodrigo Duterte alongside strongmen like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Gascon issued the statement on the 31st anniversary of the CHR. —Melvin Gascon
