PNP nabs 238 gun ban violators nationwide

Two weeks into the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election period, 238 gun ban violators have been arrested in various checkpoints and weapons check operations nationwide, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Friday.

According to the National Election Monitoring and Action Center (Nemac) as of Thursday, 64 persons have been arrested in Commission on Elections (Comelec)-PNP checkpoints with 174 violators nabbed in police gun check operations through Oplan Sita, Oplan Bakal and Oplan Galugad.

The Nemac also recorded the confiscation of 200 different types of firearms, 58 assorted bladed weapons and 11 grenades.

Gun ban violators face charges for violation of the Omnibus Election Code in relation to Republic Act 10591 and PD 1866 as amended by RA 9516.

The election period for the 2018 barangay and SK elections runs from April 14 to May 21.   /muf
