Comelec to candidates: Keep your barangay clean

As the campaign period begins, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday called on candidates in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to keep their communities clean.

“Paalala lang po sa mga kandidato natin, lalo na at campaign period na, huwag naman nating dumihan ang barangay natin (Just a reminder for candidates, especially during the campaign period, let us keep our villages clean),” Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said in an interview over Radyo Inquirer on Thursday.

The campaign period officially begins on Friday, May 4, and will end on Monday, May 12.

Jimenez also reminded candidates that election spending is not unlimited. “Ang ating kampanya ay hindi (Our campaign is not) spend all you can. Ang limit natin ay (The limit is) P5 per voter,” he said.

Jimenez said Comelec would announce on Monday its state of readiness to conduct the local elections.

He said that all ballots were already distributed in all provinces except in the National Capital Region because of its proximity to the Comelec head office.

The barangay and SK polls are set on May 14, which was declared a special non-working day by President Rodrigo Duterte to allow voters to participate in the polls. /ee
