DID YOU KNOW: May is ‘Month of the Ocean’

/ 05:00 AM May 02, 2018

The month of May is “Month of the Ocean” by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 57 signed by then President Joseph Estrada on Dec. 11, 1998.

The Constitution recognizes the responsibility of the state to protect the nation’s marine wealth.

According to the proclamation, May is the peak fishing season in the Philippines and the observance allows direct beneficiaries to show their support for caring for the oceans.

The Departments of Environment and Natural Resources, and Agriculture spearhead the activities related to the observance. —Marielle Medina
