PNP on heightened alert for Labor Day; no major threat seen

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is on heightened alert for Labor Day.

PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said they do not see any major threat on Tuesday, a holiday which is usually marked by protests.

“We do not foresee any major peace and order and security concern in connection with the Labor Day celebration tomorrow, even as it coincides with the 17th anniversary of the infamous EDSA III failed revolt on May 1, 2001, as well as the possibility that some groups may take advantage of the situation,” he said in a press conference at Camp Crame on Monday.

Albayalde said regional directors on the ground can raise the alert status if needed.

“The PNP remains on nationwide heightened alert condition, however, I am delegating the regional directors the authority to upgrade the alert status as necessary to address peculiar peace and order concerns in their areas of responsibility,” he said.

He assured they will remain “tolerant” to lawful activities, but will be “firm and uncompromising” in acts of violence, disobedience, and disrespect for the rule of law. /je
