May 4, 1988

The Western Visayas Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium was established as a unified regional research and development management group that plans, integrates, and reviews research programs of the various member institutions and agencies. It aims to propel the development of a sustainable agriculture, fishery and natural resources industry in Western Visayas. Its members and partners include the University of the Philippines Visayas, West Visayas State University, Sugar Regulatory Administration, Department of Science and Technology and National Economic and Development Authority. In September 2015, the consortium was renamed Western Visayas Agriculture Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium to include the aquatic sector.

The City of Santiago is a first-class city consisting of 37 barangays. Its major industries include agriculture, fishery and services. The city’s population in 2015 was 134,830.
