Newly installed Philippine National Police Director General Oscar Albayalde has begun his war to purge the police force of scalawags.

Albayalde on Monday reiterated that the reinvigorated internal cleansing in the national police force was one of his priorities as head of the PNP.

“We are now in the process of vetting who can be assigned to our Intelligence Group and Counter-Intelligence units,” Albayalde said during his first press conference as PNP chief.

Proven integrity

He said the elite counterintelligence units would be composed of men with proven integrity.

“These are people who would gather information on who among us are doing illegal acts,” he added.

“For the information of our police force, even minor offenses will be looked into,” Albayalde said, citing offenses such as not wearing helmets, or being rude or dismissive of crime complainants.

“If these (offenses) are so minor, why can’t they do it? Why is it mandatory for other civilians, but not the police?” Albayalde said. —Jaymee T. Gamil
