New PNP chief wants SAF training for rookies

Newly installed Philippine National Police Director General Oscar Albayalde believes that six months of police commando training will toughen up the new members of the force, particularly against on-the-job temptations.

At a press conference on
Friday in Camp Crame, Albayalde said that new PNP recruits were usually exposed to corruption during their on-the-job training (OJT).

He explained that rookie policemen undergo six months of basic training with the Philippine Public Safety College followed by another six months of OJT with the PNP.

When the recruits happen to have corrupt police handlers during their OJT, “their minds are corrupted then,” Albayalde said.

Instead of putting the recruits in the streets for their OJT, they will be at the Special Action Force (SAF) training school for another six months to undergo Basic Internal Security Operations Course, he added.

“I think it will help in developing the discipline and the attitude of our policemen, unlike when they are on their OJT,”
Albayalde told reporters.

“We will develop their skills, particularly their will to fight, just like a SAF trooper,” he said, adding that the training would be standardized.
