Doc dances vs dengue

Health official Eric Tayag has a new monicker: The dengue-fighting, “dancing assistant secretary.”

Tayag, spicing up the Quezon City government’s anti-dengue campaign, topped his speech with a performance of Shakira’s “Waka-waka,” a popular song-and-dance number.

The amiable Tayag surprised even city mayor Herbert Bautista when, in the middle of his speech at the Quezon Memorial Circle, he said, “Mayor, sasayaw po ako. Sandali lang ito (Mayor, I’m going to dance, this will just take a few minutes).” The Department of Health official then moved to center stage and began gyrating and pivoting to the popular World Cup soccer anthem.

The audience clapped wildly and the mayor and his officials soon joined in the dancing, copying Tayag’s steps as best as they could.

It was apparently Tayag’s gimmick to add more punch to the Dengue Prevention and Control Program launch.

Bautista then swore in anti-dengue brigade members for each of the city’s 142 villages. Julie M. Aurelio
