Duterte to traders: Slap corrupt execs

LEGAZPI CITY — President Rodrigo Duterte reiterated a promise to stop or reduce corruption in government, again asking businessmen to slap officials in the face if they demanded money for contract or project approval.

The President said businessmen or ordinary people should react violently if officials demanded money.

“You businessmen, if someone from Customs, police or anyone comes to you asking for money, slap them,” Mr. Duterte said at a motorcycle club convention here.

He said victims of extortion by officials need not present full evidence of the wrongdoing, just execute an affidavit in front of him.

One means by which he would know an official was corrupt was if people have to make multiple visits to a government office for documents, the President said.

That would be enough ground to fire the official, Mr. Duterte added.
