The National Youth Commission (NYC) on Friday issued a resolution urging the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to extend the deadline for the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.
In NYC Resolution No. 0013, the Council said there was “persistent clamor” among SK aspirants to extend the deadline until over the weekend.
“If this extension is granted by the Comelec, it will provide ample time for more SK aspirants to complete the requirements for the filing of COCs,” the resolution stated.
“This move supports the call of Asec Jonathan Malaya of the DILG (Department of the Interior and Local Government) to extend the period for the filing of the COCs to provide more time to those who are interested to run for the SK polls,” it added.
According to the NYC, the Comelec reported that a total of 181,296 COCs were filed in various Comelec offices for the SK polls. There were more than 300,000 seats up for grabs for SK councils.
The filing was scheduled to end on Friday, April 20. Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez earlier said that no extension would be granted. /muf
