THE JOSE RIZAL University Heavy Bombers advanced to the next round of the 2011 Philippine Collegiate Champions League after they slipped past the National University Bulldogs, 66-62, yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.
The Heavy Bombers took advantage of the absence of reigning UAAP Bobby Ray Parks for the Bulldogs as they advanced to play the Adamson Soaring Falcons today in the continuation of the step-ladder phase of this tournament.
The Bombers led for most of the way and even held a 58-50 lead with seven minutes left in the fourth period after a trifecta by Nate Matute. NU sliced the deficit down to one, 62-63, as Jeff Javillonar scored with 23 seconds left in the game.
On the next possession, Matute was fouled and split his charities for a 64-62 lead. NU had a chance to tie the game but Reden Celda’s drive fell short which forced the Bulldogs to foul John Lopez. Lopez then sealed the deal with two free-throws. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
