Poet Jose Corazon de Jesus, also known as “Huseng Batute,” was born in Sta. Cruz, Manila, on Nov. 22, 1894. Crowned as “Hari ng Balagtasan” in the 1920s, among his famous poems are “Ang Manok Kong Bulik” and “Ang Pagbabalik.” He also composed lyrics for songs such as Constancio de Guzman’s “Bayan Ko.” He died on May 26, 1932, and was posthumously honored as a Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan by the Manila City government in 1971.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
