Prisoner trying to escape Quezon jail killed by guards

LUCENA CITY – A prisoner at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) district jail in Pagbilao town in Quezon province tried to escape but was killed by jail guards on duty on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Quoting report from BJMP officials, Senior Supt. Rhoderick Armamento, chief of the Quezon Provincial Police Office, said in a text message that inmate Juvel Bergatin, 32, tried to escape from the detention facility in Barangay Talipan around 3:15 p.m. But jail guards eventually shot him after he allegedly ignored the warning shots.

He was hit him on his legs and body, causing him to fall on the ground.

Before the shooting, the prisoner ran and climbed the steel matting with barb and razor wires up to the roof of the nearby school building, the report said.

The inmate was brought to Quezon Medical Center in Lucena City but died on the way there.
