Suspected NPAs burn heavy equipment in Davao
DAVAO CITY – Suspected communist rebels torched heavy equipment in a hinterland village here, the police said on Sunday.
Armed men swooped down on at least two communities in Callawa village in Buhangin district and burned four dump trucks and a back hoe past 11 p.m. Saturday, said Senior Insp. Ma. Teresita Gaspan, spokesperson of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO).
Quoting village officials, Gaspan said two groups of armed men believed to be members of the New People’s Army descended upon Purok (Community) 4, Sitio (Sub-village) Suadan; and Purok 14, Sitio Quarry, all in Callawa, and set fire to heavy equipment owned by Leonard Trucking Services (LTS).
On Sunday, at about 7:30 a.m., alleged NPA rebels burned another heavy equipment in Dalagdag village, in Calinan district, Gaspan said, adding that the police have been sent to the scene of the latest incident to investigate.
The city’s hinterland areas in the second and third legislative districts were known to have significant presence of communist rebels owing to their considerable distance from the city proper and proximity to porous borders with Bukidnon and Davao del Norte provinces, where insurgents easily slip in and out. /cbb
