2 dead, 20 others hurt in Batangas road accident

MALVAR, Batangas—Two persons were killed and 20 others were injured (not 21 as earlier reported) when their vehicle overturned at the South Luzon Arterial Road, Barangay San Juan here early Monday, the police said.

SPO1 Marlon Fetizanan, chief investigator of the Malvar police, said an Isuzu pickup (XEL 673) carrying the group was traversing along Km 70 of the Star Tollway at around 6 a.m. Monday when the vehicle’s left rear tire suddenly exploded.

There were 22 people inside the vehicle (not 23 as earlier reported) who were on their way to Tanauan City from Lipa City when the accident occurred, said Batangas provincial police spokesman Superintendent Nicolas Torre III.

They were all rushed to the Lipa Medical Center and the Mary Mediatrix Medical Center but the truck’s driver Delfin Calazara and one passenger identified as John Paul Atienza died while undergoing medical treatment at MMMC.
