BOY DROWNS OFF LAPU BEACH

A 17-YEAR-OLD boy drowned while swimming in a beach resort in barangay Marigondon, Lapu-Lapu City last Saturday afternoon.

Police identified the fatality as Jose Antonio Maquera, of Bacoor, Cavite. The boy and some relatives were in Cebu for a vacation.

Police said the boy and his 15-year-old brother went to a floating platform, located about 30 meters from the shoreline of a resort.

The two brothers swam about 20 meters from the platform.  The brother told police that he saw the victim struggling in the waters. The boy later submerged.

The brother tried to locate the victim but failed. He then went ashore and sought help.

Rescuers later found the boy submerged in the water.

Police said the boy was rushed to the Mactan Doctors’ Hospital. Due to room unavailability, the boy was transferred to the Dr. Ignacio M. Cortes Hospital in Mandaue City where he later died./CORRESPONDENT NORMAN V. MENDOZA

MAN KILLED IN BUS-BIKE COLLISION

A 39-YEAR-OLD man was killed when the motorcycle he rode on collided with a passenger bus in barangay El Pardo, Boljoon town, northern Cebu at dawn yesterday.

Andres Bermas Jr. was declared dead when he was brought to the Boljoon Rural Health Unit.

Police said the collision occurred in a blind curve of a national highway.

Pacito Genila, 40, driver of Sunrays bus with plate number GWW-509, was arrested by police after the accident.

Another man was also killed in a separate road accident in barangay Cantuod, Balamban town, western Cebu last Saturday afternoon.

A Mitsubishi Adventure ran over George Mianon .

Police said Mianon was driving a motorcycle and tried to overtake another motorcycle.

Mianon’s motorcycle crashed and he was thrown off to the opposite lane of the road where he was ran over by the private car driven Dick Ferrolino, 41.

Mianon was rushed to the Balamban District Hospital then moved to a Cebu City hospital where he later died.

Ferrolino was detained at the Balamban police precinct while waiting for charges to be filed against him, said police./CORRESPONDENT RHEA RUTH V. ROSELL
