Yay! Hooray! ‘Will you marry me?’

CAMP CASTAÑEDA, Silang, Cavite – When she threw her shako (headgear) up in the air, newly-commissioned Jail Insp. May-Anne Bejuna thought she was only celebrating her graduation from the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA)—until her boyfriend, Insp. Tomas Allabo sprinted towards her and got down on his knee.

“Will you marry me?” Allabo asked Bejuna in front of their friends and family, surrounded by balloons and a tarp printed with the question.

Allabo, a member of the PNP-Special Action Force, popped the question soon after the 39th PNPA Commencement Exercises of the Magiting at Responsableng Alagad ng Batas na Gagabay sa Transpormasyong Alay sa Bayang Sinilangan (Maragtas) Class 2018 here on Wednesday.

Bejuna immediately said yes, drawing cheer from the crowd, including the members of the media.

In an interview, Bejuna said that while she had a feeling that Allabo would propose, she did not expect that he would do it right after graduation because they had a fight days before.

“Hindi ko talaga ineexpect kasi magkaaway kami tapos nung nakaraang gabi nakita ko na yung singsing sa photo gallery niya ta’s sinabi niya may commitment siya ngayong araw kaya hindi matutuloy,” she said.

(I never really expected it because we had a fight. But I already saw the ring in his photo gallery and he told me that he already had a commitment today.)

“So ngayon wala akong ineexpect talaga pero kanina pa ako kinakabahan. [Tapos] yun pala eto pala,” she added.

(I really did not expect anything today but I’ve been very nervous. Then here it is.)

Allabo and Bejuna have been together for four years, most of the time apart because he was training for the SAF while she was inside the Academy.

They met in 2014, when Allabo was about to graduate and Bejuna was a freshman.

He said he always wanted to marry her even before they were in training but waited for her to graduate first.

“Inaabangan ko tong araw na to kasi ito yung pinaka-moment niya na inaasam na maka-graduate sa PNPA,” he said.

(I’ve always waited for this day because this is the moment she always wanted, to graduate from the PNPA.)

The two had no plans yet of their wedding date but Bejuna’s mom, Maria Isabel, already gave her blessings to the couple.

“Masaya naman ako kasi nagmamahalan naman sila, okay na ‘yon basta nasa ayos na sila,” she said.

(I am happy because I know they love each other. It’s all good as long as they have stable lives now.)
