Woman, daughter hit by car in Mandaluyong

A 15-year-old high school student may lose her leg after she was run over by a speeding car in Mandaluyong City early Sunday morning. Janine May Cardaño and her mother Mildred were crossing the street to go for a jog around Maysilo Circle in Barangay (village) Plainview when a gray Honda Civic (UDE 693) car hit them, Inspector Renato Ubalde, chief of Mandaluyong’s traffic enforcement unit, said. The accident happened at around 6 a.m. in front of the Mandaluyong City Hall compound. Ubalde said that the mother, a 35-year-old city hall employee, fell to the ground, well away from the car’s path but her daughter was run over by the vehicle. The driver of the car who was identified as Romeo Causapin, Jr., 27, was immediately arrested by the Mandaluyong traffic police unit. “The car was obviously [traveling fast] before it hit the two,” Ubalde said over the phone. The victims were rushed to Mandaluyong Medical Center for treatment. “The mother was discharged from the hospital but the girl has been taken to Philippine General Hospital because her leg may be amputated,” Ubalde said.—Niña Calleja
