Ousted Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif attended a function as chief guest at the Islamic Jamia Naemia seminary in Ghari Shahu, Lahore last March 11Sharif made his way to the stage to address the audience in the podium, but was met with a flying shoe to the head before he even had the chance to speak, as reported by The Indian Express.

Although the shoe didn’t hit Sharif square in the face, it still hit him on the shoulder and ear. The perpetrator was a student who, upon throwing the shoe, got on stage and chanted “Labbaik Ya Rasoolullah” which roughly translates to “Here I am at your service, O Messenger of Allah.”

Security immediately caught the student and gave him a good beating. The student, who was identified as Abdul Ghafoor, a former student of the Jamia Naemia seminary, was surrendered to the police along with his accomplice, said the report.

While the shoe throwing incident made the situation tense, Sharif did not speak about it before the audience and continued on with his speech. This latest shoe hurling incident follows the ink-throwing incident that happened to Pakistan’s foreign affairs minister Khawaja Asif just a day before. Sharif and Asif belong to the same conservative political party Pakistan Muslim League.

Last year, Sharif was declared disqualified from holding public office by the Supreme Court of Pakistan after corruption allegations; authorities and the opposition questioned Sharif over the legitimacy of his funds in purchasing offshore companies and properties.
