Star-rank cop among 1,400 in PNP’s rogue list

The Philippine National Police unit that goes after rogues in uniform has over 1,400 policemen, including a star-rank officer, in its target list.

Senior Supt. Jose Chiquito Malayo, chief of PNP Counter-Intelligence Task Force (CITF), said during a press briefing on Thursday that his unit had received over 10,000 complaints of illegal activities involving policemen, since it was created in February last year.

Out of that number, 1,475 are “subject to validation and monitoring,” Malayo said.

The highest ranking officer in the target list is a general, whom Malayo said was allegedly involved in an illegal gambling protection racket.

“I think we received two reports about that (general). That was in the early months of our operation and there has not been additional information up to this time. We have not yet obtained enough evidence against him,” he said.

The majority of policemen was into the protection racket, robbery/extortion, illegal drug trade and gambling, he said. —JEANNETTE I. ANDRADE
