Lying low after the 2008 U.P. Centennial celebration, the U.P. Alumni Association Cebu Chapter is now fast moving with a scheduled homecoming on Dec. 2, 2011, at the UP Cebu College Conference Hall. The first step that the association made was to reorganize the alumni board of directors by giving more slots to UP Cebu graduates. The board invited UP Cebu alumni through their organization affiliates in college as well as their academic programs to an organizational meeting last September where an election of the new board was held. A good number of alumni representing their academic programs as well as their organizations were represented. In this case, there will be more participation from the UP Cebu alumni and the different programs of the College could now connect with their alumni.
The homecoming theme is “Rrekindling the UP spirit.” This time the homecoming will be different from the past because there will be no particular jubilarians as honorees but a new kind of recognition will be launched called the Tatak UP nga naa sa Cebu Awards. It is a recognition of the commitment of UP alumni in Cebu who stand out in their respective field of expertise and have in return made a positive impact either on the professional, economic or social development in the specific area they are serving or have served. The UP alumnus may be from any part of the UP System but is in Cebu; known for his/her integrity and moral values; recognized expertise/excellence in his/her field; and has a social conscience. Today is the deadline of the submission of nominations to the search committee. Just submit the name and the curriculum vitae of your nominees.
The theme is an urgent call of the times and many UP alumni are spread all over the landscape of Cebu doing much but still could do more. We are inviting all UP alumni who are based in Cebu to the 2011 UP Alumni Cebu Chapter Homecoming on Dec. 2, 2011, at the UP Cebu College Campus. A Mass will start the event at 4 p.m. followed by the lighting of the Christmas Tree at the Oblation Square, a tradition of the alumni chapter. There will be cocktails at the UP Cebu College Conference Hall before the program. Homecoming tickets are sold at PhP400 each. For inquiries, contact mdelacerna2001@yahoo.com or 0917-3295201 or visit UP Press Bookstore Cebu Branch, AS Building, U.P. Cebu College (Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays).
One of the activities of the UP Alumni Association Cebu Chapter is considering a proposal to the UP Cebu Administration to have the Joya Award Paintings that are lying unattended be adopted by some private individuals or agencies for their upkeep. Those interested or have friends who are interested may contact lawyer Liza D. Corro, outgoing UPAACC president, through lizadcorro@yahoo.com.ph .

In 2012, the Cebu City Charter will have its Diamond Jubilee. One of the activities slated for the occasion is the search for 75 outstanding Cebuano families who helped in making what Cebu is now. Nominees should be family members who have recognized contributions to Cebu City in the following fields: governance, business and economics, the professions/education; music and the arts, culture and heritage, religion, sports and media, science and technology. They should be residents in Cebu City and their contributions should not start later than 1965. At least two members of the family should have been recognized. The search was launched last September and the final list will be known on Dec. 2. Should you know of any candidate, please contact the secretary of the Office of the City Mayor.
