Today, March 5, is the 81st birth anniversary of National Artist for Theater and Literature Rolando Tinio.
A playwright, thespian, poet, teacher, critic and translator, he received several first prize awards from the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature.
He was also part of Teatro Pilipino where he left a considerable amount of work reviving traditional Filipino drama.
Tinio was born in Tondo, Manila, in 1937.
He died on July 7, 1997, and was named National Artist in the same year.—Marielle Medina
